Students and Volunteers

STUDENTS:

As a student, you will need to organize a placement well in advance- accommodation is very limited on the hospital grounds, and is shared with medical students. Realistically, the Rehabilitation department can only accommodate a maximum of two students in the physiotherapy and occupational therapy disciplines, and only one in the speech/language or audiology disciplines at a time. The procedure for application is as follows:
1. Email and telephone the Head of Department (Rehabilitation) on marykebez@gmail.com, or +27 35 592 0150 extension 134. Make sure you have your dates for application ready.
2. The Head of Dept will then take your application to the Human Resource committee as well as the medical manager. It is at this point that we will determine whether there is sufficient accommodation for you. We will email you back regarding the possibility of placement- do not assume we have made a decision until we have emailed you back!
3. Should you receive confirmation from us, then your University will need to send through an official letter of application for you to us. The process from here onwards will depend on whether you are from a foreign or local university, and the Head of Department will advise you on the procedure from here onwards.
4. It is imperative that you are registered with the HPCSA. Please understand that this is no small undertaking, especially if you are a foreign student (allow 6 months for this process).
5. As a student, you will be expected to prepare yourself adequately for the internship, have access to your own laptop and internet, and work with the current department schedule. We will try to help you and supervise you as much as possible, and expose you to as many learning situations as possible, but your learning and development is ultimately your responsibility and we cannot afford to spend in excess of half an hour daily tutoring you.

VOLUNTEERS:

Qualified volunteers are welcome- kindly follow the same procedure as the student applicants. When you email the head of department, kindly attach your CV, as well as scanned and certified copies of your degree, HPCSA registration and ID/passport to a letter explaining how long you would like to volunteer for, and which dates. With the current post freezes, we are very willing to try and accommodate volunteers. Realize that the longer you stay, the easier it is on us and the more you gain from the experience!
